Final Concept Design - Stage 1

Council sought feedback on a final concept design (available in the Document Library) for the West Street Cycling, Walking and Streetscape Upgrades. The project includes 100m of segregated cycleway between Pacific Highway and Ridge St, six new street trees and raingardens that will reduce run-off into stormwater drains. A continuous footpath will be built across the intersection of West Street and Church Lane to improve the pedestrian experience. The consultation period ran from 4 October to 14 November 2022.

The upgrade will support people of all ages cycling and walking between Cammeray with North Sydney and complete a section of Priority Route 1: Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway to West Street identified in the North Sydney Integrated Cycling Strategy. Community feedback will be considered in the final design so that the footpath and cycleway meets the needs of people living, working and travelling in the area. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2023.

The post-exhibition report and final detailed design was reported to Council on 30 January 2023.

Background

In 2018, Council held a workshop with interested community members seeking input into the design of the cycleway. The workshop included a design exercise where participants recorded their own designs for walking, cycling, and landscaping along West Street. However, the project was put on hold while designs for major transport projects in North Sydney were finalised. Outcomes from the workshop were used to inform the development of the final concept design currently under exhibition.

On 26 September 2022, Council resolved to progress the concept designs of Stages 2 and 3 while implementing Stage 1.
