Project Update
The West Street Cycling, Walking and Streetscape Upgrades - Stage 2 outcomes report was endorsed at the 12 August 2024 Council meeting. Minor amendments were made to the designs in response to community feedback. The updated designs include:
- Honeycomb line-marking to be marked at the beginning of the share path, near to the West Street and Amhurst Street intersection.
- The installation of wayfinding signage at the intersection of Huntington Street and West Street, & Mathew Street and Atchison Street directing cyclists around St Thomas Rest Park.
- The provision of a pedestrian crossing across West Street north of Metcalfe Street with the loss of one additional parking space from the consulted designs.
- The reallocation of kerbspace on the eastern side of West Street south of Falcon Street from “No Stopping 6:30am-9:30am Mon-Fri” and “2P 9:30am-6pm Mon-Fri Permit Holders Excepted Area 21” to “No Stopping 6:30am-9:30am “3:30pm-6:30pm Mon-Fri” and “2P 9:30am-3:30pm Mon-Fri Permit Holders Excepted Area 21” to improve intersection performance. This will result in the loss of 5 additional parking spaces during weekday evening peak hours

Final Concept Design - Stage 2
Council is seeking feedback on the final concept design (available in the Document Library) for West Street Cycling, Walking and Streetscape Upgrades -Stage 2. The project includes 1.1km of bi-directional cycleway between Ridge Street and Amhurst Street, new tree plantings, pavement upgrades and outdoor dining space.
The consultation period is open from 5 December 2023 to 3 March 2024.
The upgrade will support people of all ages to ride a bike and walk between Cammeray with North Sydney and complete a section of Priority Route 1: Sydney Harbour Bridge Cycleway to St Leonards identified in the North Sydney Integrated Cycling Strategy (available in the Document Library). Community feedback will be considered in the final design so that the footpath and cycleway meets the needs of people living, working and travelling in the area. Construction is expected to begin in 2024-25, pending grant funding.
Background
In 2018, Council held a workshop with interested community members seeking input into the design of the cycleway. The workshop included a design exercise where participants recorded their own designs for walking, cycling, and landscaping along West Street. However, the project was put on hold while designs for major transport projects in North Sydney were finalised. Outcomes from the workshop were used to inform the development of the final concept design currently under exhibition.
On 26 September 2022, Council resolved to progress the concept designs of Stages 2 while implementing Stage 1.
Construction of West Street Stage 1, between Pacific Highway and Ridge Street, was completed in July 2023.
