Background

North Sydney’s network of foreshore parks and reserves is diverse in character; however, their foreshore situation means that all these public open spaces have common values. The foreshore parks provide a welcome counterpoint to the dense, urban development of North Sydney’s commercial and residential areas, and their natural beauty and harbour location mean these areas are enjoyed and appreciated by both the local community and visitors from further afield.

The foreshore parks and reserves are used by people of all ages and abilities for walking, jogging, dog walking, picnicking, recreational cycling, informal sports and games and accessing the water. They contain recreation facilities including playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment and ancillary facilities such as seats, picnic tables, public amenities, lighting, and pathways. Small boat storage and launching facilities cater for the boating community and several small beaches provide a direct connection to the harbour. Many foreshore parks function as lookouts, providing panoramic views of Sydney and Middle Harbours, the Harbour Bridge and the city.

This draft Plan of Management examines the broad range of issues associated with North Sydney’s foreshore parks and reserves in a comprehensive and holistic manner. It sets out Council’s strategies to manage, maintain and improve these significant public open spaces over the next 10 years.

The draft Foreshore Parks and Reserves PoM applies to all public open space located on the North Sydney foreshore that is not covered in any other Council Plan of Management. Foreshore parks and reserves zoned C2 Environmental Conservation are included in Council’s Bushland Plan of Management, and there is a discrete Plan of Management for Cremorne Reserve.

Council is progressively preparing a new suite of Plans of Management that address relevant Crown reserves to comply with the requirements of The Crown Land Management Act 2016 which came into force in July 2018. View more information including FAQs and a list of areas that are included here.
