Update September 2018

The successfully upgraded stairs have been reopened for public use on Friday 28 September 2018.

Background

In the 2017/18 Capital Works Program, Council allocated funding for the upgrade of access stairs extending between Waiwera Street and Lavender Crescent in Watt Park. The mix of sandstone and concrete stairs was deemed no longer suitable for safe public use and required full reconstruction.

New access stairs connecting Waiwera Street, located approximately 14 metres above Lavender Crescent, with Watt Park were proposed to be achieved by the reconstruction of existing sandstone stairs, installation of suspended steel bridge, bitumen footpaths, sandstone retaining walls, steel handrails fitted with low impact lighting and soft landscaping.

Lavender Bay Parklands are a unique foreshore asset highly valued and supported by local residents. A composite of heritage parklands with spectacular harbour views, mature tree plantings, and access to an active foreshore area; the area is visited and appreciated by residents, workers and other visitors. Located in the Western corner of the Parkland, Watt Park is characterised by a number of mature trees, sandstone rock escarpment and children’s playground.

In 2007 North Sydney Council undertook a significant community consultation in preparation for the Lavender Bay Parklands Masterplan. Since that time the Council has allocated funding for a staged implementation of that Masterplan and to date the following works have been completed:

  • Upgrade of Clark Park landscape in September 2008
  • Lighting of Lavender Bay Foreshore in August 2012
  • An upgrade of Bob Gordon Reserve in 2014
  • The amenity block refurbished in 2015
  • Quibaree Park landscape improvements in 2016.
  • Upgrade of playground 2017

Based on the Community's feedback, a set of four options for the reconstruction have were been developed to improve the safety and ease of use of the stairway for pedestrians.

Submissions closed midnight Sunday 11 March 2018.
