Sophia Street, Crows Nest - Proposed continuous footpath treatment

Feedback closes 20 December 2024.

Council has received safety concerns about pedestrians crossing Sophia Street at Holtermann Street. This issue has been identified and listed in the North Sydney Council Local Area Traffic Management Plan 2019 (LATM) for Zone 2. In response to these concerns, Council is considering a proposal to construct a continuous footpath treatment across Sophia Street at the intersection with Holtermann Street. The proposed change would require drivers to give way to pedestrians crossing the road and would also slow down drivers before entering Holtermann Street.

To facilitate the changes, one car space on the western side of Sophia Street would be converted to “No Stopping”, and one unrestricted car space on the southern side of Holtermann Street would be gained. At the same time, the existing car share space would be shifted west by approximately 5 metres. The proposal would result in no net loss to the number of car parking spaces.

A continuous footpath treatment continues the footpath across an intersection parallel with the main street. This raised design helps drivers to slow down before entering into a residential street.

Under the road rules, drivers must give way to pedestrians or other road users when entering or crossing a footpath or any road-related area, including continuous footpath treatments.
