Share your feedback on the draft North Sydney Bike Action Plan 2025!
Consultation closes Monday 26 May 2025
North Sydney Council is seeking feedback on the draft North Sydney Bike Action Plan. The plan includes a new bike network, cycling targets, actions and a cost benefit analysis.
The North Sydney Bike Action Plan plays a crucial role in achieving the strategic outcome identified in the North Sydney Integrated Transport Strategy. The Integrated Transport Strategy details how Council, the community, businesses and other stakeholders will work together over the next 10 years to build a connected LGA where safe, active and sustainable travel is preferred.
Background
To inform the development of the plan, Council has prepared three reports summarising research, site surveys and consultation activities. These three reports have provided a better understanding of how we can make riding a bike more inclusive and a preferred mode of transport.
Stakeholder Engagement Report - summarises the feedback from the engagement activities including pop-up stalls, interviews, workshops and survey questionnaires.
Saddle Survey Report - a comprehensive assessment of the North Sydney bike network was conducted over three days, auditing the current conditions and gaps in the network.
Background Report - an evidence base of best practice bike planning and a benchmarking of local and international case studies.
What's in the North Sydney Bike Action Plan?
Updated future bike network
The future cycling network reflects the strong interest from the community for better cycling conditions. We have developed a network in which all residential streets offer safe cycling, and people can travel between suburbs and regions on protected routes. Further detrails can be found in Section 5 of the plan.
Actions and implementation plan
Actions included in this Bike Plan have been broadly categorised as either policy and behaviour change, or the infrastructure identified in the future cycling network. Further detrails can be found in Section 6 of the plan.
Future cycling target
This Bike Plan sets a mode share target of 6% by 2045, which is four-fold increase in cycling on current levels. This mode share target reflects a realistic opportunity to increase cycling activity, which is supported by the cost benefit analysis modeling
Cost Benefit Analysis
A cost benefit analysis of the network has been undertaken to understand the value for money in delivering the North Sydney cycling network. This analysis shows that for every dollar spent, the Bike Plan will generate a return of at least $1.40 for a high-cost build and up to $4.60 for a low-cost build.
What happens next?
The feedback received will be considered for incorporation into the final plan which will be considered by Council for adoption. All those who provided feedback will be advised when the Strategy will be considered by Council.
