Consultation has concluded

In June/July 2018 Council called for feedback regarding the proposed upgrade open space at the end of Hayes Street, on the western side of Hayes Street foreshore (near Neutral Bay wharf).

Background

Hayes Street wharf is an important space within the North Sydney Local Government Area. Not only is it a key transportation and retail hub for locals and visitors, but the adjoining foreshore also provides a place for visitors to relax.

In recent years, the area has undergone various upgrades and changes creating a space filled with a mixture of different materials. The upgrade aims to resolve this through creating a cohesive and functional space for locals and visitors, to beautify and activate the area through a uniformed design sensitive to the nearby surrounds.

The upgrade will:

  • Visually improve area through the use of consistent materials and surface
  • Provide new precast concrete pavers to a new outdoor dining area (Note: outdoor dining will be subject to a Development Application)
  • Provide new picnic tables, bench seats, bins, bike racks and bollards (as per Public Domain Style Manual)
  • Provide a pleasant environment for residents and visitors to relax

Consultation results

Council received a total of 72 submissions, 55 were surveys submitted online (via this webpage) and 10 were hard copies/email. 6 submissions were free form feedback received either as hard copy or by email. 1 submission was made by a Precinct Committee.

Of the responses received:

  • 81.9% of participants supported the upgrade and 18.1% were either against or undecided
  • 58.3% supported the new design, 22.2% not in favour, and 14 (19.4%) were undecided

A report outlining the preliminary findings of the community consultation was considered by Council at its meeting held on 24 September 2018. The report documents the content of submissions received, and sets out the recommended amendments resulting from the consultation. The report is available in the document library.

Status update May 2019

Stage 1 of the upgrade has been completed. Works include new concrete paving, custom seating, brass railing and native grass gardens.

Stage 2 is pending.
