Council seeks feedback on its Public Art Masterplan, a high level 10-year plan to govern public art holistically across the North Sydney local government area.

The Masterplan sets a framework for the delivery of public art with a focus on key public art projects identified in Council’s current major strategic planning documents and will ensure Council is able to maintain and deliver high quality and meaningful public art outcomes well into the future.

The Masterplan has been informed and guided by Council staff, relevant external stakeholders including local, state and federal government public art and strategic planning representatives and staff from the Aboriginal Heritage Office. It has also been shaped and informed by Council’s strategic planning documents to ensure all the projects and recommendations align with Council’s vision for the future of North Sydney including:

  • Arts & Cultural Strategic Pan 2019-2022
  • North Sydney CBD Public Domain Strategy 2020
  • Ward Street Precinct Masterplan 2019
  • Civic Precinct Planning Study 2020
  • St Leonards Crows Nest Planning Study Precincts 2 & 3 2015
  • Education Precinct - Public Domain Masterplan
  • Kirribilli Village Centre Masterplan
  • North Sydney Visitor Economy Strategy and Action Plan

The accompanying amended Public Art Policy is also on exhibition, both documents can be found in the Council report available in the Document Library.

    In 2014 Council initiated the North Sydney Public Art Trail as part of the vision to promote the culture of the North Sydney CBD and immediate surrounds and contribute to the development of a progressive, vibrant and diverse North Sydney community. The development of the North Sydney Public Art Trail was a significant placemaking, cultural development and tourism initiative, providing a high-quality public art experience which celebrates the uniqueness of the locality.

    In 2017 Council delivered the North Sydney Public Art Trail Masterplan which includes 20 sites of cultural significance, landmarks and public artworks located from Kirribilli to North Sydney, and several major artworks commissioned by Council within CBD. The Public Art Trail continues to expand with the inclusion of public art in new developments.

    A Council report dated 20 November 2017 (CiS04: Public Art Masterplan – Update) recommended that a Public Art Masterplan be prepared in place of a North Sydney Public Art Trail Masterplan with the aim to govern public art holistically across the local government area. The following four key objectives were identified:

    • develop a comprehensive LGA wide Public Art Masterplan with a supported Public Art Policy.
    • develop a best practice document for Council and external stakeholders which outlines and guides the Public Art process and strategies over a ten- year period.
    • define the heritage and unique characteristics of the area with the aim to ensure future public artworks are in line with the values and qualities as identified.
    • identify key sites for proposed new commissions with detailed schedule including scope of works, timelines, and recommendations.
