Council resolved to publicly exhibit the the draft Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Protocol Guidelines at its meeting of 28 June 2021 (View report and draft Guidelines in the Document Library).

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Protocol Guidelines were first developed in 2014 to promote greater understanding between Council, the community and First Nation’s people who live, work or visit the North Sydney local government area.

The Guidelines acknowledge the rich Aboriginal heritage in the area and highlight contemporary customs, values and codes of behaviour that are important to Aboriginal people today.

The Guidelines have been reviewed by Council’s Aboriginal Heritage Office. They are now being placed on public exhibition to seek input from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as well as peak organisations representing First Nations people.

It should be noted that while members of the wider community are welcome to comment on the format of guidelines, the protocols within the Guidelines are that of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait peoples.

Hard copies of the documents will also be made available for viewing if the NSW Government stay-at-home orders are lifted during the exhibition period. These will be located at Council’s Customer Service Centre and Stanton Library during opening hours.
