Background

Council recognises community gardening as a valuable recreational activity that contributes to the health and well-being of the whole community and provides a wide range of environmental, social and educational benefits.

Community Gardens are unique forms of public open space which are managed by community volunteers primarily for the production of food and to contribute to the development of a sustainable urban environment. They are places for sharing and learning about sustainable living practices, and for actively building community through shared activities.

In mid 2017 Council received a community led proposal for a community garden in Anzac Ave, Cammeray (in front of the Anzac Park Public School). In late 2017 Council conducted community consultation regarding the proposed community garden including raised garden beds, seeking feedback from local residents as to the level of support for the proposal and to hear from those interested in being involved in the garden. 685 letters were sent to residents in surrounding streets calling for feedback. Feedback closed 15 September 2017.

Council received significant support for the project. The consultation findings were reported to Council at its meeting of 19 February 2018, whereby Council resolved to support the project. The park is readily accessible and has sufficient sun exposure to be viable. The area taken by the garden will leave a considerable amount of adjacent public open space for all forms of passive recreation. The design intention is to have the garden complement the existing park installations and memorials.

Community volunteers assisted to construct the garden and it opened in mid March 2019.
