Council at its meeting of 26 July 2021 resolved that all existing Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas related to New Years Eve be renewed for NYE 2021-2024, with the amended definition and timing of NYE to be from 7am, 31 December - 7am, 1 January. There are no changes proposed to the zones/areas that were in place for NYE 2017-2020. (see maps available in the Document Library).

Note: While details for NYE 2021 have not been confirmed by State agencies, renewal of Alcohol Free/Alcohol Prohibited areas is subject to statutory reporting and public exhibition timeframes which have to be met should the event proceed in any capacity.

The NYE Special Event Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas have expired and need to be renewed for the next four years from 2021-2024 (7am on 21 January 2025), the maximum time allowed under Ministerial guidelines.

Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas have assisted in managing the negative impacts of alcohol consumption on NYE since 2012 and have previously been supported by NSW Police. Alcohol Free Zones and Alcohol Prohibited Areas go a long way in creating a safe event environment, assist in reducing injuries from the presence of broken glass in parks. Reserves and streets, widespread intoxication, and under-age drinking.

Alcohol Free Zones apply to streets and footpaths and are in force 24 hours a day. Alcohol can be carried unopened but cannot be consumed in these zones. Alcohol Prohibited Areas apply to parks, plazas and car parks and the hours can be flexible. Alcohol cannot be taken into or consumed in these areas and may be confiscated or tipped out.
