FEEDBACK CLOSED 11.59pm 30 MAY 2021

In Oct/Nov 2020, North Sydney Council reported to the local community about its intentions to undertake significant, essential upgrade works along Miller Street and Blue Street. The works were to be rolled out in four stages. Stages 1 and 2 have been completed. Council now sought input on Stages 3 and 4 under which works can be undertaken.

The works consist of milling the existing asphalt surface, excavating and reinstating the damaged concrete pavement beneath the road’s surface, and laying a new asphalt seal.

Miller and Blue Streets are important regional roads which connect North Sydney to the City attracting tens of thousands of vehicles each day. The proposed works are considered necessary because various areas within the pavement have subsided. It is important to maintain these roads to ensure the safety of all road users.

The completion and commencement dates plus durations are outlined in the table below. A locality map is available in the Document Library.

LocationSectionApproximate Commencement DateDuration
Stage 1Miller StreetBerry to McLaren Streets
Completed Feb 2021

Stage 2Miller Street

1 week
Stage 3Blue StreetMiller St to Pacific Hwy

(Originally scheduled Jul 2021, delayed due to COVID-19)
1 week
Stage 4Miller Street
Carlow to Falcon Streets
Commenced 9 October 2022, anticipated completion date 21 October 2022
(Originally scheduled Aug 2021, delayed due to COVID-19)
1.5 weeks

The proposed works require approval from the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) which is a division within Transport for NSW. Based on previous similar works undertaken along Miller Street, TMC will not permit the works to be undertaken during the day as it will result in major traffic disruptions and create a safety hazard. Council is therefore obliged to undertake the works at night.

In relation to construction duration, two options are provided for each stage of the works for consideration by residents as follows:

Stage/LocationOptions
Stage 3 (Blue Street between Miller St to Pacific Hwy)

Option A - 7 consecutive nights; or

Option B - 3 consecutive nights over 3 weeks.

Stage 4 (Miller Street between Carlow to Falcon Streets)

Option A - 9 consecutive nights; or

Option B - 3 consecutive nights over 5 weeks.

Option A entails undertaking the works on straight consecutive nights until completion. Option B allows the spread of duration across several weeks by limiting the works to a maximum of 3 straight consecutive nights in any given week and providing residents with 4 nights of noise reprieve.

Regrettably, both options will cause disruption to normal sleeping patterns. Council is therefore seeking input from affected residents to determine which option will have the least negative impact on their wellbeing. Residents are kindly requested to use the link below to vote on their preferred option and provide any feedback.

Council welcomes any questions and/or recommendations regarding the two (2) options available including additional proposals for how residents may think the works can be undertaken better to minimise disruption.

Please note that while Council will do everything possible to ameliorate the impact of the works, Council will ultimately have to follow State Government directions on this matter.

Pedestrian access to properties and businesses will be maintained during construction. Vehicle access to properties will also be maintained, along with access to emergency vehicles and buses. Detours will be enforced for all other vehicles. Access to driveways may be restricted on some occasions to ensure the works are conducted safely and efficiently.

Background information available in the Document Library includes images of pavement failures and slides from an introductory information session.
