In accordance with Council’s Playgrounds Plan of Management and Playgrounds Methodology, the existing Merrett Playground (Woollcott Street, Waverton) is scheduled for upgrade.

The existing playground is approximately 20 years old and has been very well-used during this time. Council seeks to revitalise this popular facility while retaining the beautiful, leafy, garden character of the existing playground. The proposed upgrade will retain some of the existing elements but will aim to increase functionality and accessibility and where space permits some new play elements will be added.

Project Objectives

To create a refurbished and expanded playground that:

  • retains the existing leafy, garden character of the playground
  • provides a variety of play equipment for a range of ages and abilities, including inclusive play opportunities
  • provides a pleasant environment for parents and carers with an adequate amount of seating positioned to facilitate easy supervision; and
  • provide maximum play value by offering many different types of new activities (swinging, climbing, sliding, bouncing, balancing etc)
  • remain in the existing boundary and retain the existing slides and timber platforms

Design Overview

The proposal is contained within the existing playground boundary and it retains the existing slides and timber platforms as well as:

Existing swing sets replaced with a new multiple set of swings suitable for all ages.

  • Play area expanded with:
    1. new zone dedicated to sand and water play including timber bridge;
    2. concrete tricycle track connecting to existing pathway;
    3. bushwood and sandstone stepping logs which form part of a nature play;
    4. multi-play structure with a great play value for school aged children, activities including climbing, sliding and balancing;
    5. rubber surfacing in high traffic areas;
    6. seesaw for up to two children at a time
  • a new picnic setting, park seat, bin enclosure and accessible bubbler and bottle refill station installed within the playground
  • If budget allows, a timber cubby house

The design option has been developed to suit the specified age group and the available budget for this project. View the draft Concept Plan in the Document Library.

Note: this project does not include changes to the surrounding parkland, please only provide feedback on elements of the play space.
