UPDATE JULY 2019

North Sydney Council’s new waste and recycling collection contract begins on 1 July 2019, when some service changes and improvements will be implemented. After a full review of the responses from the waste and recycling community consultation, changes have been incorporated into the new contract to improve quality and efficiency.

The Sunday cut off time for general household and green waste clean-up bookings is now 4.00pm on Sunday. The new time change will not affect the schedule or frequency of collections.

80L red lidded wheelie bins will replace the 60L carry bins. The new 80L wheelie bin will help improve the environmental amenity of North Sydney, and will also improve the waste collection service efficiency whichwill assist to keep costs down. The old 60L carry bins have loose lids that often allow litter to escape into the street.The new 80L waste bin will be easier tomanoeuvre and is sturdier with an attached lid which will also help Council adhere to WHS requirements for the collectioncontractors. The bin delivery and replacement program is a significantlogistical operation; old bins will be collected and removed and recycled aspart of this project.

GreenWaste bins (240L) are available for purchase via Council’s website, these binsare required for more efficient collections.

BACKGROUND

During December 2017 and January 2018, North Sydney Council undertook extensive community consultation to inform the service requirements for its future residential waste and recycling contract.

Our current waste and recycling collection service expires on 1 July 2019.

Council investigated ways to enhance the current service. Some of the options that will be examined include:

  • provision and maintenance of bins to all residents (i.e. eliminating bins that are owned and maintained by residents)

  • streamlining price points for bin sizes

  • improving quality of bins

  • improving portability of bins (i.e. WHS and manual handling)

  • provide incentives for increased recycling

Council’s waste and recycling management objectives are:

  • cost effective collection and disposal methods

  • reduced waste taken to landfill sites through increased recycling and reuse of collected materials

  • environmentally responsible waste transportation, reprocessing and handling

Phone Survey - On behalf of Council, commencing from 14 December 2017, Jetty Research conducted telephone surveys of 400 randomly selected local government area residents.

Online Survey - Those not selected to participate in the telephone survey could complete the survey online, survey is now closed.

Submissions - Were accepted online, via email or via post - submission period has now closed
