UPDATE 27 JANUARY 2021

The Smoothey Park Plan of Management 2016 identified a series of improvements for Smoothey Park that have been implemented over time as funding has become available. In 2020/21 budget Council allocated funding for the investigations, consultation, design and improvement of the open space area known as Smoothey Park.

The objectives of the proposed landscape improvement include:

  • provide new staircases and upgrade footpaths to improve access and circulation around the park
  • provide additional seating and replace the old and mismatched park furniture
  • protect natural landscape and celebrate the area’s rich natural heritage
  • provide new planting and remove exotic species in order to protect nearby bushland
  • ensure Smoothey Park meets the community’s recreational needs
  • provide upgraded signage in order to achieve a consistent identity in the park

From 11 November - 10 December 2020, Council invited community feedback in relation to the Council’s proposal for the landscape upgrade of the Smoothey Park area.

The proposal included installation of two staircases, low sandstone walls and edging, adjustments to existing footpaths and entry points, removal of exotic species, replacement of old park furniture and signage.

Sixteen participants of the consultation provided a written submission.

All submissions generally expressed support for the proposed landscape upgrade. Feedback was invited on four subjects:

  1. New staircase and upgraded footpath
  2. New planting and the removal of exotics
  3. New park furniture
  4. General feedback.

A summary of submissions is available in the Document Library.

Based on the results of the consultation Council will proceed with the implementation of the proposed upgrade.

In order to address the concerns and identified issues, changes to the final design will include gradual removal of exotic plant species, use of sandstone blocks to serve as casual seating, storm water management improvements and provision for a kerb ramp at Milroy Ave crossing.

Thank you for participating in the community consultation, Council will proceed to the quotation stage and implementation of works.
