Consultation has concluded
Although largely considered the responsibility of the Federal and State governments, Local Councils play a significant role in addressing homelessness. (NSW Homelessness Strategy 2018-2023)
North Sydney Council has a long history of supporting people experiencing homelessness, or who are at risk of becoming homeless, through assertive outreach, collaborative partnerships, community development initiatives, as well as the provision of social and affordable housing stock.
Data released by the ABS from the 2021 Census noted a decrease overall in people experiencing homelessness, with a total of 327 people reported being homeless in North Sydney. Whilst the number of people has decreased from 411 people in 2016, community expectations and concerns relating to people experiencing homelessness has increased.
Council periodically reviews its plans and strategies that support the goals of the North Sydney Community Strategic Plan. This includes the update of the Homelessness Strategy to accurately reflect Council’s priorities and goals in addressing and responding to homelessness.
To inform the revised Strategy, Council will gather current information on the local needs and issues that affect individuals who are experiencing homelessness, or who are at risk of becoming homeless, within the North Sydney local government area. This information will guide how Council addresses the most urgent issues.
Stakeholders will have two opportunities to participate in the Homelessness Strategy review:
Preliminary Engagement
Focus Groups - will be held with homelessness services and organisations providing support to people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness
One-on-one Interviews - with people with lived experience of homelessness
Survey - complete the short survey by 11.59pm Friday 12 May 2023
Public Exhibition
More details will be provided once the draft Strategy has been prepared and reported to Council for endorsement to exhibit for 42 days. You can give feedback on the Strategy during the exhibition period.
