Grasmere Reserve Playground Update

Update Friday 17 April 2025

Following community consultation, site visit with stakeholders, and an internal review of all feedback received Council has developed a revised concept design which incorporates the communities' input. Key changes include:

  • A reduced playground footprint
  • Simplified play equipment to align with the natural setting of the reserve
  • Retention and retrofitting of the existing play equipment.

These changes will see a reduction in the construction costs. Council has also secured grant funding through the NSW Premier’s Department's Local Small Commitments Allocation (LSCA) Grants Program. This funding will cover the supply and installation of the park furniture shown in the revised plan.

Background

In accordance with Council’s Playgrounds Plan of Management and Playgrounds Methodology, the existing Grasmere Reserve Playground (Benelong Lane, Cremorne) is scheduled for upgrade.

The existing playground was constructed in 2004 and Council seeks to revitalise the existing playground. The proposed upgrade will retain some of the existing elements but will aim to increase functionality and some new play elements will be added.

Project Objectives

The project’s objectives are to create a refurbished playground that:

  • provides a safe and engaging space to promote physical activity and social development
  • retains the existing leafy, garden character of the current playground;
  • provides a variety of play equipment, for a range of ages and abilities
  • provides a pleasant environment for parents and carers, with adequate (informal) seating positioned to facilitate easy supervision; and
  • provides maximum play value by offering many different types of activities (spinning, swinging, sliding, balancing, climbing etc)

Design overview

The proposal includes:

  • A reshaped and expanded playground layout inspired by the Leatherjacket fish.
  • Refurbished play structure, featuring a new staircase, step climber, and additional panel.
  • Refurbished T-swing with 1x strap seat and 1x toddler seat
  • Nature play opportunities that complement the reserve's natural setting, including timber balancing elements, sandstone seating edge and sandstone climbing and clambering elements.
  • Repurposed and refurbished spinner cup.
  • Rubber surfacing for fall zones.
  • Upgraded park furniture including seats and picnic sets.

The design option has been developed to align with the project's available budget. The Consultation concept Plan can be accessed in the Document Library.
