In accordance with Council’s Playgrounds Plan of Management and Playgrounds Methodology, the existing Fred Hutley Reserve Playground, in Hamilton Ave, Cammeray is scheduled for upgrade. This project is funded by the approved Special Rate Variation and due for completion by 30 June 2022.

The playground was last upgraded in 1999. The existing playground fits comfortably into the corner of the Reserve, with stroller access from Palmer Street. It is surrounded by a low timber retaining wall which functions as both as the playground edge and informal seating. Behind this wall, landscaped mounds create a physical barrier between children and the street and soften and screen the playground, creating a relaxed and intimate atmosphere with a range of equipment including a triple embankment slide, spinning poles, traditional roundabout, cable climb structure and swings.

The existing playground has been very well-used, and is well-loved, so the proposed refurbishment will retain some of the existing elements. It aims to increase safety, functionality and accessibility and where space permits, some new play elements will be added.

Project Objectives

To create a refurbished and expanded playground that:

  • retains the existing leafy, garden character of the playground
  • provides a variety of play equipment for a range of ages and abilities, including inclusive play opportunities
  • provides a pleasant environment for parents and carers with an adequate amount of seating positioned to facilitate easy supervision; and
  • provides maximum play value by offering many different types of activities (spinning, swinging, climbing, sliding, bouncing, balancing, climbing etc).

Two design concepts were prepared to suit the available budget. View the draft plans in the Document Library. The public exhibition period ran from 16 December 2021 to Sunday 13 February 2022.

Note: this project does not include changes to the surrounding parkland, please only provide feedback on elements of the play space.
